Policies on Good Academic Standing, Academic Probation, and Academic Dismissal can be found in the Undergraduate Catalog. Definitions of these terms and other probation-related terms are as follows:
To be in Good Academic Standing, a student must maintain a cumulative grade point average of a 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. Only grades earned at Illinois State are computed into a student’s grade point average.
Each semester, Illinois State identifies students that appear to be in jeopardy of going on academic probation. Students on Academic Warning receive a newsletter designed to help them develop a plan to improve their grade point average.
When a student’s cumulative grade point average falls below a 2.0/4.0, they are on academic probation.
A student is dismissed from Illinois State University at the end of any semester, except for summer session, if the student’s cumulative grade point average is below a 2.0 for a second or subsequent time. Additionally, when the student is dismissed from the University, they are also dismissed from their major.
Students who are dismissed from Illinois State can petition the University Reinstatement Committee for permission to continue enrollment. Petition information is provided with the dismissal notification, which is posted with grades on the iCampus portal as well as mailed to a student’s home address. Reinstated students are Undeclared Students and need to reapply for a major program once returning to Good Academic Standing.
A student should expect to remain out of school for at least one calendar year before the Reinstatement Committee will act on a petition for reinstatement. Only students who have extenuating circumstances should plan to apply for reinstatement for the semester following their dismissal.
A student’s probation history is the number of semesters their cumulative grade point average is below the 2.0/4.0 required for Good Academic Standing. Probation history is permanently on your academic record.
A student that has a cumulative grade point average below a 2.0 has a grade point deficiency from Good Academic Standing. A grade point deficiency is how many credit hours of “B” grades a probation student must earn to achieve Good Academic Standing.
Project Success is an intervention program designed specifically for students on Academic Probation. Participation is required. Students must attend two Success Seminars, submit a Success Plan, complete an Advisor Conference, and attend at least one Visor Center workshop. Information about Project Success is mailed and emailed to students at the beginning of each semester.
